Newly released bodycam footage of a November 16 incident shows a severely intoxicated Michigan sheriff attempting to use his blue privilege in order to avoid being arrested for driving under the influence. Below in this article, we will discuss the Drunk Sheriff to Deputy: “You Can’t Take Me to Fucking Jail. I’m a F’n Sheriff”.

Footage shows Kalkaska County deputy Ashley VanSloten tapping on Midland County Sheriff Scott Stephenson’s car door.

“Sir,” she repeats several times.

“You need to wake up and talk to me,” she says, snapping her fingers as Stephenson mumbles something unintelligible.

“What are you doing? You’re on the side of the road slumped over. What’s going on today?” she asks.

A few minutes later, Sheriff Stephenson wakes up and asks about the flashing police lights.

“I have you lighted up because we had a call . . . well, first off, it’s so no one hits us,” VanSloten explains to Sheriff Stephenson.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” he replies.

“And second of all, someone called and said you were sitting on the side of the road, slumped over, which you were.”

“Yeah,” Stephenson admits.

“What’s going on today?”

“Nothing,” he replies.

“You gotta give me a little more than that. We all don’t just sit down and sleep on the side of the road,” she says.

“Have you been drinking?”

“Yeah.”

“But, but I’m not driving,” Sheriff Stephenson explains.

“Right, but how did you get here is the question.”

“Yeah, I know. I uh, uh, bad dealio.”

“Do you know who I am or not?” Stephenson asks as VanSloten radios in to update dispatch.

“I don’t know who you are,” VanSloten replies.

The two go back and forth stuttering over each other before Sheriff Stephenson notices more flashing lights arriving.

“Oh, shit, what the fuck? Are you kidding me?”

Stephenson then hands VanSloten his badge and explains he’s a sheriff.

“I’m the fucking Midland County Sheriff. I’m fucking good. I had a fucking bad day. K?”

“I don’t need EMS. I don’t need you.”

Footage later shows Stephenson standing outside of his car.

He eventually performs several field sobriety tests then takes a breathalyzer test, which measures his blood alcohol content level at .233 percent.

After performing the tests, Sheriff Stephenson begs VanSloten as well as Garfield Township Police Chief Jerry Cannon not to arrest him.

“Jesus Christ, I’m fucking praying,” he says. “Try to fucking help me out, man. I can’t go to fucking jail for fucking drunk driving. Are you fucking kidding?”

Chief Cannon offers to let the sheriff off the hook.

“I could take responsibility for him,” Cannon tells VanSloten.

“I know what you have to do.”

VanSloten crossed the Thin Blue Line and took Stephenson to the Kalkaska County Jail, according to ABC13.

“I made a poor choice. I drank too much today,” Stephenson says as he’s being hauled into the hoosegow.

Since the incident last month, Sheriff Stephenson has already pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while visibly impaired.

He was fined $1,030 and placed on probation until 2020 as part of his punishment.

He has apologized to the public for what happened.
